For Athletes, Parents And Coaches
Sport presents a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and excel. It’s also complex and emotionally challenging.
To fully develop an athlete’s potential, the technical, tactical, physical, and mental components of sport must all be integrated.
Why Mental Fitness Consulting?
The mental game is often overlooked in competition preparation.
Athletes, their coaches, and parents usually focus on the other aspects of performance. The ‘how to’ of technical, the 'strategy' of tactical, and the 'strength and agility' of physical performance.
These are all crucial, however, without the mental aspect, the other components will fail the athlete when it counts in the critical moments of competition. How often do we hear, “But it went so well in practice!”. Remove one chair leg, and things quickly begin to dangerously wobble.
The difference between good athletes and top athletes is their mindset and how they manage their reactions to the people and challenges in their training and competition environments.
How it works
My role is not to replace the coach, but rather to supplement and support.
I am there to help the athlete, coach, and parents figure out how the athlete can perform even better. This may involve speaking with just one member of the ‘team’ or engaging with those involved. I work to align everyone’s role in the athlete’s performance and ensure the four components of sport integrate effectively.
I have developed a proprietary model that provides a foundation for assessment and improvement strategies.
Usually, we will work on some or more of:
Athletes
- Your relationship with yourself and the impact this plays on your performance
- How to manage relationships with teammates
- Controlling your nerves before and during competition
- Bouncing back from and taking advantage of setbacks
Parents
- Your role in the athlete’s performance. Often overlooked and sidelined
- Managing the athlete’s pre and post games
- Managing your own emotions and attachment to outcomes
- Maintaining a developmental bias through the training cycle
Coaches
- Understanding your athlete’s learning style, strengths and typical derailers
- How to create an environment that builds commitment in the athlete
- Managing your own emotions and their impact on the athlete’s ability to perform
- Strategic communication to manage conflict or inspire change
